Parents, has this ever occurred to you?
Last fall, I read an article about mold on car floor mats, which forms due to snow and slush, It said that when you turn the heater on, it blows mold spores all over the car. If you have the heat directed toward the floor, the spores are directed under the seat and into the faces of children in the back seat. I now clean or replace them more often. Something to think about?
emmy, if you or your children are allergic to mold, believe me, it would be a concern because the person would be sick.

We live in Texas so we don’t get much snow (if any at all). But we do sometimes get freezing rain. We just let our car air out and take out the mats and air dry them once or twice a week when needed.
But that is something to think about if you live up North where it snows. Keeping the heater off is not really a plausible option given the freezing temperatures though (I’ve lived in Alaska and Kansas, so I know cold and I know heaters are a must).
I’d suggest getting plastic covers for the mats or switching to plastic mats with towels you can replace often.

Mold under the floor mats isn’t the only place for mold. We had it under the dashboard – near the heater vents.

This should really be the least of your worries…

I had never thought about it…guess i need to clean my mats out more often, since its getting that time of year here. Thanks

That hasn’t occurred to me. My husband is a environmental scientist and certified industrial hygienist and I doubt it has occurred to him either! Thanks for posting that. It’s a good thought. I think our mats are due for a change… I’ll have my husband test the indoor air quality of the car while we’re at it just to check! I’m curious now.
